Welcome to Technology at Val Vista Academy! I really enjoy teaching technology to all the students at Val Vista. We are so privileged here that every student has an opportunity to be on the computer. We learn a lot of ways to use the computer. Every month we focus on 3 or 4 skills: Application, Keyboarding, Digital Citizenship, and Coding for 4th-8th grade. All classes are encouraged to collaborate with one another, to problem-solve, to persist, and to create.
All k-8 students use Microsoft Office 2013. Everyone uses Word and has exposure to PowerPoint. The upper classes get creative in Publisher and 2-8 learn about Excel.
Our formal “home row” keyboarding instruction begins in the 2nd grade. Kindergarten and 1st focus on mouse control and familiarity with the keyboard. 2nd and 3rd graders enjoy an online program called DanceMat. The 4th-8th grade use the program Typing Master. Students results are recorded and timed tests are taken. We celebrate the top 2 Keyboard Speedsters in each grade level! Students can practice keyboarding at home using DanceMat or other online keyboarding sites. Typing Master requires a log in and is not accessible from home. The state standards for the grade levels are as follows: 3rd: 5wpm 4th: 10wpm 5th:15wpm 6th: 20wpm 7th:25wpm 8th:30wpm.
All grades receive instruction on Digital Citizenship and concepts get reviewed monthly and yearly to keep our students safe and responsible on the internet!
All k-8 students participate in the international Hour of Code in December. They will spend 1 hour in the computer lab coding and experiencing the challenges and fun that come with computer programming. All students have the opportunity to continue their learning at code.org. Students in grades 4-8 will have formal coding instruction through code.org. They will learn drag and drop basics, vocabulary terms related to computer science, problem solving, critical thinking, persistence, and creativity.
The computer lab is a fun place to be!
