Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year!  I am looking forward to our 6th year of technology!

Welcome to Technology at Val Vista Academy! I really enjoy teaching technology to all the students at Val Vista. We are so privileged here that every student has an opportunity to be on the computer. We learn a lot of ways to use the computer. Every month we focus on 3 or 4 skills: Application, Keyboarding, Digital Citizenship, and Coding. All classes are encouraged to collaborate with one another, to problem-solve, to persist, and to create.

3-8 students use GSuite.     K-2 use Office applications on the desktop.

Our formal “home row” keyboarding instruction begins in the 1st grade. Kindergarten focuses on mouse control and familiarity with the keyboard. 2nd and 3rd graders enjoy an online program called DanceMat. The 1st and 4th grade use the program Typing Club. 5th grade uses Typing Master. Students results are recorded and timed tests are taken. Students can practice keyboarding at home using DanceMat or other online keyboarding sites. Typing Master requires a log in and is not accessible from home. The state standards for the grade levels are as follows: 3rd: 5wpm 4th: 10wpm 5th:15wpm 6th: 20wpm 7th:25wpm 8th:30wpm.

All grades receive instruction on Digital Citizenship and concepts get reviewed monthly and yearly to keep our students safe and responsible on the internet!

All k-5 students participate in the international Hour of Code in December. They will spend 1 hour in the computer lab coding and experiencing the challenges and fun that come with computer programming. All students have the opportunity to continue their learning at Students in grades 3-5 will have formal coding instruction through They will learn drag and drop basics, vocabulary terms related to computer science, problem solving, critical thinking, persistence, and creativity.

This year technology electives for 6-8 include yearbook, digital photography, and digital newspaper.

The computer lab is a fun place to be!
